The Thermostat On Your Radiator Is Lying To You

It says 22 degrees. It is mounted 30 centimeters above a 55 degree hot piece of metal. Of course it says 22. It is measuring its own heat. Move that same thermostat to your desk where you actually sit, two meters away from radiator. It says 18. Move it to the floor where your kid plays. It says 16. Which temperature did you pay for? You pay for 22 but you live in 18. That is why you keep turning it up.

For 100 years we put the brain in the wrong place. We put it on the heater. The heater is the hottest thing in the room. It is like putting a thermometer inside the oven and asking if the kitchen is warm.

With gas you have one brain for the whole house. One boiler in the basement decides for 100 square meters. You must heat everything or nothing. You heat guest room for 3 months for nobody. A radiator must run constantly because it stores heat in air. Air stores 0.34 Wh per cubic meter. You open a window for 5 minutes, all heat is gone, walls still 14 degrees cold, you need an hour to reheat.

Infrared stores heat in your house itself. Floor, walls, sofa, bed. One cubic meter of brick stores 500 Wh, 1500 times more than air. You already own 100 cubic meters of that storage for free.

Thermostat heats walls to 22 degrees, then turns off. Walls keep radiating for 40 minutes while panel is off. Air drops only 1 degree because walls warm it. Then thermostat turns panel on for 20 minutes to recharge walls. Effective work is 2.5 hours per day, 1.75 kWh per day per room, 0.44 euro per day per room, whole winter per room about 79 euros.

Open windows for 10 minutes. With radiators you lose everything. With infrared you lose air but heat stays in walls and floor. Close window and in 3 minutes air is warm again because walls warm it. You can finally ventilate without guilt.

How People Actually Live With It

Living room 21 degrees from 17 to 23 only. Not all day. Bedroom 19 for sleep, but 22 for 20 minutes before alarm so floor warm when you step barefoot. Kids room 21 from 14 to 20 only. Office Monday to Friday 9 to 5 only. Guest room 15.5 all winter anti mold mode for 6 cents a day because warm wall at 15.5 can never get wet. Weekend house on coast has no water inside so nothing can freeze and burst. Leave at minus 15 for 3 months completely off. One hour before arrival tap ON on phone, arrive to warm floors and bathroom mirror that never fogs because it is 45 degrees warm glass.

No air movement, no dust flying, no burning smell, humidity stays at healthy 50 percent, not 30. Mold ends in 3 weeks without bleach because outside wall is now 21 degrees warm, so 24 degree humid air cannot leave water on it. Physically impossible to condense on warmer surface.
